Bedford Borough has a rich and diverse historic environment comprising archaeological remains, historic buildings, settlements and landscapes.
Protecting and enhancing our local heritage
Our Historic Environment Service protects and enhances the historic environment of Bedford Borough by:
- managing and maintaining the Bedford Borough Historic Environment Record
- providing archaeological advice on pre-application proposals and planning applications
- providing advice on managing change to listed buildings and conservation areas in response to pre-application enquiries, listed building consent and planning applications
- developing conservation area appraisals and management plans and delivering heritage-led regeneration schemes
- providing a countryside advice service to landowners and Natural England on the management of the rural historic environment through countryside stewardship schemes.
- developing and delivering monument management schemes
- responding to proposed changes to national and local policy and historic environment guidance
Little Barford conservation area designation
The Council is considering designating a new conservation area in Little Barford.
As part of this process, the Council is researching and writing a draft conservation area appraisal and management plan which is currently scheduled to be released for public consultation in late November 2022.
Public consultation is an essential part of the process offering the opportunity for feedback and suggestions. Therefore, ahead of producing these documents an initial workshop event is being undertaken to gather information from interested parties, consider the provisional conservation area boundary and to provide information on why the village is being considered for a conservation area.
This workshop will be held on Wednesday 5 October from 2:15–6:45pm at St Neots Library, Priory Lane, St Neots PE19 2BH.
This workshop is being run as a drop-in style event with the opportunity to provide written comments/feedback on the proposed conservation area boundary and special interest of the village.
